It is with great pleasure that I introduce L. Michelle Bennett, Ph.D., as the deputy scientific director for the NHLBI in the Division of Intramural Research (DIR). Dr. Bennett’s experience in improving communications, developing best scientific practices, and coordinating team-based initiatives, as well as her outstanding scientific vision, will make her an invaluable asset.
Michelle comes to us from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), where she was deputy director of the Center for Cancer Research. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin- Madison and completed a postdoc in molecular carcinogenesis, performing some of the earliest work on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and their role in breast cancer. She then worked as a senior biomedical scientist in breast cancer research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory before joining the NCI in 2002 in science administration and communications roles.
As deputy scientific director for the NHLBI, Michelle will oversee our scientific cores, manage interactions between the NHLBI and regional hospitals, and oversee the Board of Scientific Counselors process. She will also continue her work on promoting and recruiting for the DIR.
Please join me in welcoming her to the NHLBI family.
