NHLBI Centers of Excellence Meet to Discuss Global Health
Office of the Director - December 23, 2009
On December 16-17, 2009, representatives from all institutions in the UnitedHealth and NHLBI Collaborating Centers of Excellence joined NHLBI staff members in Bethesda, Md. for their first semi-annual steering committee meeting. Supported by the NHLBI and by the UnitedHealth Chronic Disease Initiative, the Centers of Excellence are a remarkable team effort stretching across oceans and cultures to confront chronic non-communicable cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases in low and middle income countries.
The meeting provided a forum for the centers and their partner institutions in high-income countries to share their best practices and lessons learned. It also allowed them to identify opportunities for collaboration, both among themselves and with regional, national, and global policymakers. Collaborations have already been created among Latin America Centers of Excellence in Guatemala, Peru, Argentina, and the U.S.-Mexico Border, and an epidemiology subcommittee has been formed with members in Peru, Kenya, Bangladesh, Guatemala, and India-New Delhi. Such collaborations are increasingly important as we strive to combine scientific advancements with public health needs to provide sustainable and culturally appropriate health care to all who need it. The Centers identified common research protocols, data standards and training as the three highest priority items for their work together.
The next meeting will be in New Delhi in April 2010, where the group will report on their independent projects and continue to develop common network activities identified as having great value during the Bethesda meeting.
