Office of the Director - March 4, 2010
Rick Childs, M.D. recently hosted a pair of celebrity visitors. As part of their reality TV series The Giuliana and Bill Show, E! News anchor Giuliana Rancic and her husband, Bill, the first winner of The Apprentice, came to Childs' lab to talk about his current research on kidney cancer.
Childs, who is chief of the Section of Transplantation Immunotherapy in the Hematology Branch at the NHLBI, showed the Rancics around his lab and talked to them about recent advances his team has made that are helping researchers better understand renal cell carcinoma and could translate into new treatments for metastatic kidney cancer. Those advances include new antigens to aid in vaccine therapy and monoclonal antibody therapy.
Bill and his family have supported kidney cancer research for many years. Bill created the Dr. Edward T. Rancic Memorial Fund at the Foundation for the NIH in honor of his father, who was a patient of Childs', and the Rancics are involved with the Dean R. O'Neill Renal Cell Cancer Research Fund at the Foundation. Childs and many others participate in the fund-sponsored "Boo! Run for Life" marathon each October to raise awareness of kidney cancer.
"It isn't until you come here and see what he's doing that you get the impact," said Giuliana, who grew up in Bethesda after age seven and attended the University of Maryland and American University. "Dr. Childs makes this research easy to understand."
"We're honored to be part of this," added Bill. "We're here to help [Dr. Childs] and his great team in any way we can."
The segment appeared online in January 2010.
